You have a diagnosis, a budget and a dozen browser tabs: India, Thailand, Turkey, Malaysia, Singapore, Dubai. Every destination says it is the best. This guide puts them side by side with published numbers — and tells you honestly when India is not the right choice.
How the destinations rank
The Medical Tourism Index, published by the US-based Medical Tourism Association, scores 46 destinations on three things: the country's environment (economy, safety, image), the tourism experience, and the quality of facilities and services. Its 2020–21 overall top ten:
- Canada — 76.47
- Singapore — 76.43
- Japan — 74.23
- Spain — 72.93
- United Kingdom — 71.92
- Dubai — 71.85
- Costa Rica — 71.73
- Israel — 70.78
- Abu Dhabi — 70.26
- India — 69.80
Notice what the index does not measure: price. The top places are excellent and expensive. India is the only top-ten destination where most planned operations cost a small fraction of Western cash prices.
How many patients each country receives
| Malaysia 2025 | 1,840,000 |
|---|---|
| Türkiye 2024 | 1,500,000 |
| India 2024 | 644,387 |
Each country counts differently: Malaysia and Türkiye count healthcare travellers who received care; India counts foreigners who arrived for medical purposes. Thailand publishes revenue, not a comparable patient count. Sources: Malay Mail 2026; Hürriyet 2025; Ministry of Tourism 2025.
Numbers alone do not tell you where to go. Malaysia's patients are mostly Indonesians crossing a short sea. India's are mostly Bangladeshis crossing a land border. The real question is: which destination is best for your condition, from your home?

Which destination fits which patient
- India: complex heart, transplant, cancer, spine and joint surgery at the lowest prices; large teaching hospitals; English widely spoken; Ayurveda and yoga for recovery. Best for patients from Africa, the Gulf, Central and South Asia and the diaspora.
- Thailand: polished private hospitals and hospitality; strong in cosmetic, check-ups and wellness. Best for patients already in South-East Asia or the Pacific.
- Türkiye: close to Europe; known for hair transplants, dental and cosmetic work, and IVF. Best for European patients wanting a short trip.
- Malaysia: regulated pricing, good value in South-East Asia. Best for Indonesian and regional patients.
- Singapore and the UAE: top-ranked quality and very high cost. Best when budget is not the main concern.
- What is the condition?complex surgery, cosmetic, check-up or wellness
- Who has the most experience?volume of your procedure, not the brochure
- What is the total cost?treatment + flights + stay + a companion
- How long can you stay?and does the visa allow it?
- Who looks after you at home?follow-up, records and medicines
Five checks, whichever country you choose
- The named doctor: registration, training and how often they do your procedure.
- The hospital: national or international accreditation (in India, NABH or JCI).
- The written estimate: itemised, with what happens if you need extra days.
- The follow-up plan: who you call after you fly home, and how records reach your doctor.
- The money trail: pay the hospital or a traceable account — never cash to an agent.
When we will tell you not to choose India
If you live in Singapore with good insurance, or your surgery is a simple day procedure available quickly at home, travelling may not be worth it. If a doctor at home has offered you fast, affordable care, take it. We are a facilitator for India, but our first promise is honesty — read when we say no.
Equally, if a destination closer to you has the right specialist at a fair, transparent price, that may be the wiser choice for your family. Good medical travel starts with the right question, not the cheapest answer.
