"Which is the best hospital in India?" It is the most common question we hear — and the honest answer is: the best one for your condition, your budget and your recovery. Here is how to judge hospitals and doctors with facts, not adverts.
What India's official ranking says
India's Ministry of Education publishes the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) every year. Its medical list scores teaching hospitals on teaching, research, graduate outcomes, outreach and reputation. The 2025 top ten:
- AIIMS, New Delhi
- PGIMER, Chandigarh
- Christian Medical College, Vellore
- JIPMER, Puducherry
- SGPGIMS, Lucknow
- Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi
- NIMHANS, Bengaluru
- King George's Medical University, Lucknow
- Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore (medical campus in Kochi)
- Kasturba Medical College, Manipal
Most of these are public or trust institutions with heavy local demand. They are superb for complex cases and second opinions, but waiting times and international-patient services vary. Many visitors are treated at accredited private hospitals instead — often by doctors who trained at these same institutes.

Five checks for any hospital
- Accreditation: NABH (India's national standard) or JCI (international). Read what the badges mean.
- Volume: how many of your procedure does the team do each year? For complex surgery, experience matters.
- Outcomes: ask for infection, readmission and complication data. See the questions worth asking.
- International desk: interpreters, visa letters and a named coordinator.
- Transparent pricing: an itemised written estimate before you travel.
Public, trust or private?
- Public institutes (AIIMS, PGIMER, JIPMER): outstanding for complex and rare conditions and research, very low prices, but long queues and limited private rooms. Best for second opinions and specialist reviews.
- Charitable trust hospitals: good care at lower prices, run as non-profits. We often suggest one first when it fits — read why.
- Private multi-speciality hospitals: faster scheduling, private rooms and international desks; prices are higher and vary widely, so compare estimates.
Red flags to walk away from: a "guaranteed" result; pressure to pay a deposit to an agent's personal account; an estimate with no itemised lines; a doctor whose name you cannot find on any register; and anyone who discourages a second opinion.
How to find — and verify — the right doctor
Every doctor practising in India must be registered with a state medical council or the National Medical Commission (NMC). You can check a name on the NMC's Indian Medical Register. Our guide on how doctors are credentialed walks you through it.
- Registrationfind the doctor on the NMC or state council register
- TrainingMD/MS plus DM/MCh or a fellowship in your exact condition
- Experienceyears in practice and yearly volume of your procedure
- Second opinioncompare with a second specialist before you decide
A famous name is not always the right name. The best doctor for you explains options — including not operating — and answers your questions without hurry. That is why our US$99 consultation includes a second call, with the same doctor or a different one.
How we choose for you
Our own doctor list is short on purpose. Each specialist is registered, practising in an accredited hospital, and willing to explain options in plain words to patients from abroad.
We do not sell hospital rankings. Hospitals cannot pay to appear on our site. We often suggest a charitable trust hospital first when it fits the case, and we explain every choice in writing. Read how we choose doctors and Trust as a Service.
