Delhi, Mumbai or Chandigarh for Treatment?

Delhi, Mumbai or Chandigarh for treatment in India? An honest comparison of hospitals, air quality, cost of staying, recovery and travel times between them.

Most international patients arrive in India through Delhi or Mumbai, and many assume treatment must happen there too. Some of India's best hospitals are in both cities. So why do we base ourselves in Chandigarh? This is our honest comparison of the three — including the places where Chandigarh is not the obvious answer.

First, choose the doctor, not the city

The single most important choice is the specialist and team for your condition. A city is only right if the right doctor is there. For most common treatments — joint replacement, heart surgery, spine surgery, eye care, IVF, check-ups — excellent options exist in all three cities. For a few rare or highly specialised treatments, one centre may be the clear choice, and then you go where that centre is. A specialist consultation answers this before anything else.

Once the doctor is settled, the city shapes everything around the treatment: the journey, the air you breathe while you recover, the noise, the cost of staying for weeks, and how easy it is for your family to visit.

Delhi: the biggest choice, the hardest air

Delhi and its neighbours Gurugram and Noida have one of the densest clusters of large hospitals in India, including several JCI-accredited private hospitals and the government's flagship AIIMS. Delhi's international airport has more direct flights than any other in north India, so it is often where your journey starts.

The honest drawback is air quality. In 2025 Delhi recorded an annual average PM2.5 of 96 µg/m³ — second-worst in India in an analysis by the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air, and almost twenty times the WHO guideline. Winter months are the worst. For patients recovering from heart or lung problems, or anyone spending several weeks, that matters. Traffic and distances inside the city are also tiring for someone just out of hospital.

Mumbai: world-class centres, sea air and high costs

Mumbai is home to famous specialist institutions, including the Tata Memorial Centre for cancer, and well-known private hospitals. As a coastal city its air is generally cleaner than Delhi's: in IQAir's 2019 figures, Mumbai averaged 45.3 µg/m³ against Delhi's 98.6.

The trade-offs are cost and crowding. Mumbai is one of India's most expensive cities for a long stay, homes and hotels near major hospitals are often small, and travel across the city can take hours. The monsoon, roughly June to September, brings heavy rain that can disrupt plans.

Chandigarh: calm, green and close to the hills

Chandigarh is a planned city, designed in the 1950s around green sectors, wide roads and parks, with Le Corbusier's Capitol Complex at its edge. The wider Tricity, including Mohali and Panchkula, has the government teaching hospital PGIMER and a growing group of private hospitals. Life moves at a gentler pace, recovery walks are easy, and the Himalayan foothills — Kasauli is about an hour and a half by road — are close for a quiet convalescence.

Air is generally cleaner than Delhi's: IQAir's 2019 average for Chandigarh was 52.6 µg/m³. But we will not pretend it is clean all year. That figure was above Mumbai's, and in winter Chandigarh's air can turn poor too — on the day we checked, 1 November 2026, IQAir showed a PM2.5 reading of 113 µg/m³. We plan winter stays with this in mind.

Getting there is simple. From Delhi, Chandigarh is about an hour by air, or a few hours by train or road; from Mumbai the fastest direct flight takes about two hours and a quarter. Chandigarh's own airport also has a few direct international flights, such as to Abu Dhabi.

So which should you choose?

  • Choose by doctor first. If your best specialist is in Delhi or Mumbai, go there.
  • For a long recovery, a calmer city with easier walks and lower living costs makes a real difference.
  • For heart or lung conditions, think carefully about air quality and season, wherever you go.
  • For family visits, check flight connections from your home country.

We base ourselves in Chandigarh because, for many patients, it combines good hospitals with a gentle place to heal. But we will always tell you if another city suits your case better. How far is Chandigarh from Delhi?

About one hour by air. Many international patients fly into Delhi and take a short domestic flight, or travel by train or road.

Is Chandigarh's air cleaner than Delhi's?

Generally yes: IQAir's 2019 annual PM2.5 average was 52.6 µg/m³ in Chandigarh against 98.6 in Delhi. But winter air in Chandigarh can still be poor, and Mumbai's average was lower than both.

Which city in India is best for medical treatment?

The best city is wherever the right specialist for your condition works. Delhi, Mumbai and Chandigarh all have strong hospitals; they differ in air quality, cost of staying, pace of life and travel.
