Shoulder Replacement in India: Total, Reverse and Costs

Shoulder replacement in India: who needs it, total vs reverse designs, physio-first options, published costs vs the US and UK, and a recovery plan.

He can still lift a cup, but only if he brings his head down to meet it. Reaching a high shelf, fastening a seatbelt, sleeping on his good side — every small movement has a price. When arthritis or an old tear wrecks a shoulder, a replacement can give much of that life back. But it is not the first answer, and it is not the only one. Here is how we explain it to families.

Who needs a new shoulder — and who does not yet

The shoulder is a shallow ball-and-socket joint held in place by a ring of tendons called the rotator cuff. Surgeons usually talk about replacing it for three reasons: osteoarthritis that has worn the cartilage away, rheumatoid arthritis, or a large, long-standing rotator cuff tear that has let the ball ride up and damage the joint. A badly broken shoulder in an older person is a fourth.

Many people never need the operation. Physiotherapy to strengthen the muscles around the joint, pain relief, activity changes and, for some, a steroid injection can keep a shoulder comfortable for years. If your main problem is a torn tendon without arthritis, a repair — not a replacement — may be the right conversation; our story on rotator cuff and dislocation surgery covers that.

A replacement makes sense when pain wakes you at night, daily tasks are hard, and months of sensible treatment have not helped. That judgement belongs to a shoulder surgeon who has seen your X-rays and, often, an MRI or CT scan. Our US$99 consultation includes two calls, so you can go back to the same surgeon with questions or ask a second one for an opinion.

Total, reverse or partial: the three designs

  • Anatomic total shoulder replacement. A metal ball and a plastic socket copy the normal shape of the joint. It suits arthritis when the rotator cuff is healthy.
  • Reverse shoulder replacement. The ball and socket swap places, so the large deltoid muscle can lift the arm when the rotator cuff no longer can. It is widely used for big cuff tears with arthritis and for some fractures in older people.
  • Partial (hemi) replacement. Only the ball is replaced. It is chosen less often today, for particular fractures or younger patients.

Ask which design your surgeon recommends and why. The answer depends on your tendons, your bone and what you want to do with the arm afterwards.

US: Turquoise Health average cash price (checked October 2026). India: PACE Hospitals ₹1.8–8 lakh (June 2026) and CARE Hospitals ₹1.5–5 lakh, converted at ₹95 per US$. UK: Cleveland Clinic London from £12,865. Indian figures are hospital-published estimates, not quotes; your own estimate comes after a doctor reviews your reports.

Inside the Indian range, the implant is the biggest variable: reverse designs usually cost more than anatomic ones, and brands differ. Your room category, the number of nights in hospital and any extra scans also matter. Ask for the implant brand and model in writing, along with what the package includes — surgery, implant, physiotherapy, medicines and follow-up visits. Package prices are per person and exclude flights.

Most international patients land in Delhi. Chandigarh is about an hour away by air, and its flat, leafy sectors make the short daily walks your physiotherapist prescribes easy and pleasant.

Back home: the sling and the slow return

Shoulder replacements reward patience. Most people wear a sling for several weeks, and the timing of each stage — driving, lifting, reaching overhead — comes from your surgeon, not from a calendar. Reverse replacements in particular often come with lifelong advice about heavy lifting.

  • Do the home exercises every day; they matter more than anything else.
  • Sleep propped up for the first weeks if lying flat is uncomfortable.
  • Seek help quickly for fever, a red or leaking wound, or sudden new pain.
  • Carry your implant card and book a review with a local orthopaedic surgeon.

Our care team keeps in touch after you fly home, and your Indian surgeon stays reachable for questions — see how we handle follow-up from abroad.

Questions to ask your surgeon

  • Have I tried enough physiotherapy and other treatment first?
  • Anatomic or reverse — and why for my shoulder?
  • Which implant brand, and how long has it been in use?
  • How many shoulder replacements do you do each year?
  • What movement can I realistically expect, and what will stay limited?
  • Exactly what does the estimate include?

Read our joint replacement guide, compare costs side by side, or book a consultation and send us your scans.

常见问题

How much does a shoulder replacement cost in India?

Hospital-published ranges run from about ₹1.5–5 lakh (CARE Hospitals) to ₹1.8–8 lakh (PACE Hospitals), roughly US$1,600–8,400. The implant design and brand move the price most.

What is the difference between a total and a reverse shoulder replacement?

A total replacement copies the normal ball-and-socket shape and needs a healthy rotator cuff. A reverse replacement swaps them so the deltoid muscle can lift the arm when the cuff is badly torn.

How long should I stay in India after shoulder replacement?

We plan about three weeks, with daily physiotherapy. Your surgeon decides when it is safe to fly.
