How much does treatment in India really cost compared with the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom? We gathered the latest published prices and waiting times, converted everything to US dollars, and added the cost of the trip. Here is what we found, how we found it, and what the numbers cannot tell you.
How We Compared
- US prices: average cash prices from Turquoise Health, and transplant cost estimates from Milliman (2025).
- India prices: published ranges from CARE Hospitals and PACE Hospitals.
- Canada and the UK: waiting times from the Fraser Institute and NHS England (July 2026 data), and examples of private prices.
- Exchange rate: ₹95 = US$1, the rupee's close on 25 August 2026 (HDFC Sky).
- Cautious by design: we compare against the top of each India range.

US: average cash prices (Turquoise Health, 2026). *Transplants: Milliman's estimated total billed charges from 30 days before to 180 days after the transplant, including medicines — list prices, which insurers usually negotiate down, so this comparison is not like for like. India: published price ranges from CARE Hospitals (knee, hip, heart bypass, transplants, IVF) and PACE Hospitals (spinal fusion), converted at ₹95 = US$1. International patient packages can cost more than these ranges.
Even at the top of the India range, the saving before travel is between 73% (knee) and 94% (heart bypass).
زراعة الأعضاء
The gap looks enormous, and it is real, but read it with care. Milliman's US figures are billed charges for the whole episode, from 30 days before the transplant to 180 days after, including medicines. Insurers usually pay less. The India ranges cover the transplant itself.
Transplants for international patients in India need a living donor, usually a close relative, approved by a hospital authorisation committee under Indian law. The donor travels with you, so add their flights and stay.
IVF
One IVF cycle in India costs ₹1–2.5 lakh, about US$1,100–2,600 (CARE Hospitals). US prices vary too widely between clinics for one fair average, so use your own clinic's quote in our savings calculator.
Canada: the Price Is Time
Care is publicly funded, but in 2025 the median wait from a GP referral to treatment was 28.6 weeks. For orthopaedic surgery it was 48.6 weeks, and for neurosurgery 49.9 weeks (Fraser Institute).
Some Canadians now pay privately at home. CBC reported a Toronto patient who paid C$33,000 for a knee replacement in 2025 (CBC).
The UK: Waiting Lists and Self-Pay
In July 2026, 7.33 million cases were waiting for NHS treatment in England. The median wait was 12 weeks, and 65.3% were seen within 18 weeks, against a standard of 92% (NHS England data via Cover; latest official figures: NHS England).
Paying privately is fast but expensive: one private hospital's self-pay guide price for a knee replacement is £17,445 (Nuffield Health Leeds).
Europe
Most European countries fund surgery publicly, so the saving is mainly in time, and in treatments your system does not fully cover, such as some dental work and IVF. Type your own quote into the calculator to see your figure.

Why Some Prices Are Low by Law
India's drug-price regulator, the NPPA, sets a ceiling price for heart stents. From 1 April 2026 a drug-eluting stent may not cost more than ₹39,186, about US$410, before tax (Medical Dialogues). Knee implants have also been price-controlled since 2017; in November 2025 the cap was under review (Medical Dialogues).
Adding the Trip
A fair comparison includes flights, a stay, food and visas. Here is a knee replacement for a US patient with one companion and three weeks in India.
| Item | Cost |
|---|---|
| Knee replacement in India (published range) | US$1,579–US$6,316 |
| Return flights, 2 people × US$1,300 (assumption) | US$2,600 |
| Stay, 21 nights × US$60 (assumption) | US$1,260 |
| Food and local travel, 2 people × 21 days × US$25 (assumption) | US$1,050 |
| Visas and other costs (assumption) | US$150 |
| Total in India | US$6,639–US$11,376 |
| Average US cash price for the same operation | US$23,157 |
| Your saving | US$11,781–US$16,518 (51%–71%) |
What These Numbers Don't Tell You
- Flying after surgery raises the risk of blood clots. Your surgeon decides when it is safe to fly home.
- Complications can add days and money. Ask what the written estimate says happens then.
- Your insurance at home may not pay for treatment abroad, or for problems that follow it. Ask your insurer in writing first.
- Follow-up at home still matters: stitches, scans, medicines and physiotherapy. Line up a doctor before you go.
- Legal routes differ. Complaints and compensation work differently from your home country.
- These are indicative prices. Published ranges are a guide; international packages can cost more. Only your written estimate counts.

أسئلة
Where do the US prices come from?
Joint, spine and heart surgery: average cash prices published by Turquoise Health, which collects hospital price-transparency data. Transplants: Milliman's 2025 cost estimates, which are billed charges and include care before and after the operation.
Where do the India prices come from?
Published price ranges from CARE Hospitals and PACE Hospitals, two accredited private hospital groups. They are general ranges, not quotes, and international packages can cost more.
Are the comparisons like for like?
Close for joint, spine and heart surgery. Not for transplants: the US figures include six months of care and medicines and are list prices. We show them because they are the best public figures, and we say so plainly.
Why do you use the top of the India range?
To be cautious. If the saving holds at the top of the range, it holds for most patients.
