How to Choose a Hospital in India: a Calm Decision Framework

Acreditación, la experiencia del cirujano en su procedimiento, un presupuesto por escrito y una segunda opinión: un método paso a paso para elegir el hospital adecuado para su afección, no el más anunciado.

India has hundreds of accredited hospitals, and the best one for heart surgery may not be the best one for cancer care. The right choice comes from matching the hospital — and above all the specialist — to your condition. Here is the calm, step-by-step way we help families decide.

1. Start with the Diagnosis, Not the Hospital

Before comparing hospitals, make sure the diagnosis and the proposed treatment are right. A specialist who reads your actual reports — scans, biopsies, blood tests — can tell you whether surgery is needed, whether a gentler option exists, and what kind of centre suits you. That is what our $99 video consultation is for. Read why we insist on it in Why we don't push surgery.

2. Read Accreditation as a Baseline

AccreditationWhat it tells youWhat it doesn't
NABH — India's national hospital accreditationThe hospital meets national standards for patient safety, infection control, patient rights and clinical governance. How experienced a particular surgeon is with your procedure.
JCI — Joint Commission InternationalThe hospital meets an international accreditation standard. That it is better than an NABH hospital for your condition.
NABL — laboratory accreditationThe hospital's laboratory meets quality standards for testing.Anything about surgery or ward care.
NOTTO registration — transplantsThe hospital is authorised for organ transplantation under Indian law.— required, not optional, for any transplant.

You can check accreditation yourself on the official NABH and JCI websites.

3. Ask About the Specialist, Not Only the Brand

  • How often does this specialist perform my procedure — not the department as a whole?
  • What are the usual risks and complications for a patient like me, and how are they handled?
  • Is there a non-surgical or less invasive option, and why is it or isn't it right for me?
  • Who looks after me in intensive care, at night and after discharge?

4. What a Good Centre Has, by Condition

ConditionLook for
Heart surgeryA dedicated cardiac surgery team and cardiac ICU, a 24-hour cath lab, cardiac rehabilitation
CancerA multidisciplinary tumour board, pathology and radiotherapy on site, supportive and palliative care
Joint replacementAn experienced joint team, a clear physiotherapy plan from day one
Spine and brainNeuro-navigation and nerve monitoring in theatre, a dedicated neuro ICU
TransplantNOTTO authorisation, a full transplant team and a clear legal process for donors
FertilityAn accredited embryology lab, honest, age-specific counselling

5. Compare Written Estimates — Then Decide

With BookMedTrip, the hospital's written estimate always comes before you book anything. Compare what is included (room category, implants, medicines, specialist fees, days in hospital) rather than the headline figure. Then think about the practical side: where your family will stay, food, language, and how far the hospital is from the airport. Our guide to why Chandigarh explains why many families find the Tricity easy.

Your Decision Checklist

  • The diagnosis and treatment are confirmed by a specialist who has read my reports
  • I know whether a gentler option exists
  • The hospital's accreditation is current
  • I know the specialist's experience with my procedure
  • I have a written estimate and know what it includes
  • My family's stay, food and travel are planned
  • I know the follow-up plan after I go home — see our recovery roadmap
  • The final decision is mine

Preguntas frecuentes

Is NABH accreditation enough?

NABH is India's national hospital accreditation and a strong baseline. It does not replace asking about the specialist's own experience with your procedure.

Should I always choose a JCI hospital?

Not necessarily. JCI is an international accreditation; many excellent Indian hospitals hold NABH only. Match the hospital to your condition and the specialist.

Will I get a written estimate?

Yes. With BookMedTrip the hospital's written estimate always comes before you book anything.
