A missing tooth changes more than a smile. People chew on one side, stop laughing with their mouth open, hold back in photos. A dental implant can fix that — but it is a process, not a single appointment. Planned well, it fits neatly into two short trips to India.
What an implant is
An implant is a small screw, usually titanium, placed in the jawbone where the root of the tooth used to be. Over the following months the bone grows tightly around it — a process called osseointegration. Then a connector (the abutment) and a crown are fitted on top. The result looks, feels and chews like a natural tooth.
Most adults with enough healthy jawbone are candidates. Things that can make implants a poorer fit include active gum disease, uncontrolled diabetes, severe bone loss and smoking or vaping, which slows healing. Bone loss is not always a full stop: bone grafts or a sinus lift can rebuild the site, though they add time.
Implants are not the only way to fill a gap. A bridge fixed to the neighbouring teeth, or a removable partial denture, can be quicker and cheaper. The trade-off is that a bridge means filing down healthy teeth on either side, and a denture can move when you eat. An implant stands on its own and helps keep the jawbone from shrinking where the tooth was lost. A good dentist will lay out all three, not only the most expensive.
Why it usually takes two visits
The bone needs time. Cleveland Clinic puts osseointegration at three to nine months. That is why most international patients split treatment into two trips.
- Trip one (about 5–7 days): examination, a 3D cone-beam CT scan, cleaning and any extractions; the implant is placed under local anaesthesia. You leave with a temporary tooth if the gap shows when you smile.
- At home (3–6 months, sometimes longer): soft food at first, careful cleaning, and photo or video check-ins with your dentist.
- Trip two (about 5–7 days): the abutment is fitted, impressions or a digital scan are taken, and the final crown is made, tried in and adjusted until your bite feels right.
Between the trips, life carries on. Most people return to work within a day or two of the implant being placed. Expect some swelling and tenderness for a few days, eat soft food on the other side, and avoid smoking completely — it is one of the main reasons implants fail to bond.
In selected cases the dentist can place a tooth on the implant the same week (“immediate loading”). It depends on bone quality and how firmly the implant sits — ask, but do not insist.

Brands, warranties and paperwork
Implant systems come from many makers, from long-established Swiss and Swedish brands to widely used Korean and Indian ones. Price differences are real, and so are differences in research history and how easy it is to find compatible parts abroad.
- Ask for the brand and model in writing, plus the implant sticker or card with lot numbers. Your dentist at home will need it.
- Ask whether the system is available in your country, so a local dentist can service it later.
- Read the warranty. Manufacturer warranties and clinic guarantees are different things; check what each covers and for how long.
- Ask about the crown material — zirconia or porcelain fused to metal — and its own guarantee.
What it costs
| USA · implant post only | 3,075 |
|---|---|
| India · top of range, with crown | 526 |
| India · low end, with crown | 211 |
US: national average for code D6010 (implant post), ADA fee survey data via Pearl, updated May 2026; abutment and crown cost extra. India: CARE Hospitals published range ₹20,000–50,000 per implant with prosthesis, converted at ₹95 per US$.
We plan each trip so that scans, implant surgery and crown work fit into a single week. A sunny week between appointments is also a chance to see the city’s gardens or take a short trip into the hills.
The comparison is not exactly like for like — the US figure is the post alone — but it shows why so many people travel. Your written estimate should list scans, extractions, grafts, the implant, abutment, crown and follow-up. Package prices are per person and exclude flights.
Questions to ask your dentist
- Is my bone thick enough, or will I need a graft?
- Which implant system, and is it used in my country?
- Will I have a temporary tooth between trips?
- What exactly is included in the price, and what could be extra?
- Who will look after the implant at home, and what should I do if it feels loose?

Preguntas
How much does a dental implant cost in India?
Published ranges are about ₹20,000–50,000 (about US$210–530) per implant with crown, depending on the brand. Scans, grafts and extractions can add to that.
Can I get dental implants in one trip?
Sometimes, with immediate loading, if your bone is strong. Most people need two trips three to six months apart while the bone bonds to the implant.
How long do dental implants last?
With good cleaning and check-ups the implant itself can last a lifetime; crowns typically last around 15 years.
