It is often a mother who notices first: one shoulder blade sits higher, a school uniform hangs unevenly, a bend forward shows a rib hump. Scoliosis — a sideways curve of the spine — is common, and most curves never need an operation. Some do. This guide walks families through the whole path, from watching to bracing to surgery, so you know which conversation you are in.
What scoliosis is, and why it is measured
Scoliosis means the spine curves to the side and twists. In most teenagers no cause is found; doctors call it adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. Other types come from birth differences in the vertebrae, nerve and muscle conditions, or wear and tear in older adults.
Specialists measure the curve on a standing X-ray in degrees (the Cobb angle). Two other things matter just as much: how much growing the child has left, and whether the curve is getting bigger. A modest curve in a child who has finished growing behaves very differently from the same curve in a ten-year-old.
Watch, brace or operate
- Observation. Small curves are checked with X-rays every few months while a child grows. Many never progress enough to need treatment.
- Bracing. For moderate curves in children who are still growing, a fitted brace worn for many hours a day aims to stop the curve getting worse. It does not usually straighten the spine; it holds the line.
- Exercise. The NHS notes it is not clear whether back exercises improve a curve, but general exercise is good for health and should not be avoided unless a doctor advises it. Physiotherapy can help comfort, strength and confidence.
- Surgery. Only a small number of people need it. It is considered for large curves, curves that keep progressing despite a brace, or, very occasionally, curves causing severe problems in adults. The usual operation is a spinal fusion with rods and screws that correct and hold the spine.
A good scoliosis team will tell you honestly which stage your child is in. That is why we always start with a specialist review of the X-rays — a US$99 consultation that includes two calls, so you can return to the same surgeon or ask a second one.

What surgery costs
| USA · average hospital cost, 2011 | 155,278 |
|---|---|
| India · top of published range | 12,632 |
| India · low end of range | 2,632 |
US: average hospital cost for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis fusion, national data 2001–2011, reported in Spine (2014) via Becker’s Spine Review — older data, not like for like. India: PACE Hospitals ₹2.5–12 lakh+ (2026), converted at ₹95 per US$. Indian figures are hospital-published estimates, not quotes; your own estimate comes after a doctor reviews your reports.
The number of levels fused, the implants, spinal-cord monitoring during surgery, and intensive-care days decide where you sit in the range. Ask for a written estimate that names the implant system and says whether nerve monitoring and blood management are included.
How a scoliosis surgery trip runs
- Send standing X-raysFull-spine views, plus bending films and an MRI if available
- Specialist reviewWatch, brace or operate — explained on a video call
- Arrival and planningFresh X-rays, lung and heart checks, blood tests
- SurgeryFusion with rods and screws, with spinal-cord monitoring
- Hospital stayUsually about a week, standing and walking within days
- Recovery stayTwo to three weeks of walking, wound care and school-work rest
- Final reviewX-rays, discharge summary, activity plan
- Fly homeWhen the surgeon is happy
A parent usually travels with a teenage patient; both apply for medical visas. Chandigarh is about an hour from Delhi by air. The Rock Garden and Sukhna Lake are gentle, flat outings once the surgeon allows longer walks — a welcome change of scene for a young person stuck indoors.
Life after surgery
Scoliosis is not only about bones. Wearing a brace, or facing an operation, can be hard on a teenager’s body image and confidence. Talk about it openly, involve your child in decisions, and ask the team whether they can connect you with other families or a support group. Many adults with treated scoliosis say the hardest part was the waiting, not the surgery.
Most teenagers return to school within weeks and to sport over months, on their surgeon’s timetable. The fused part of the spine no longer bends, but the rest does, and many people forget the rods are there. Keep the follow-up X-rays; they confirm the fusion is solid.
Preguntas que hacer
- Is the curve still progressing, and how much growth is left?
- Would a brace or a period of watching be reasonable first?
- Which levels would you fuse, and why there?
- How many scoliosis operations does your team do each year?
- Do you use spinal-cord monitoring in every case?

Preguntas
Does every scoliosis curve need surgery?
No. Most curves are small and are only watched. Children who are still growing may be braced. Surgery is considered for large or progressing curves.
How much does scoliosis surgery cost in India?
PACE Hospitals publishes about ₹2.5–12 lakh or more (about US$2,600–12,600), depending on how many levels are fused, the implants and intensive-care days.
How long does a family need to stay in India after scoliosis surgery?
We usually plan three to four weeks: about a week in hospital and two to three weeks of recovery nearby before the surgeon clears the flight.
