Hidden Valleys of Himachal for a Gentle Recovery

Chandigarh sits at the foot of the Himalayas, and within a day's drive are valleys that most travellers never see: wooden villages above trout rivers, apple orchards, cedar forests and lakes with a temple on their shore. Many families here open their homes to guests. This is our guide to the quieter Himachal — the places we suggest for a gentle recovery stay, once your doctor agrees.
Before you go: recovery stays are arranged only with your treating doctor's approval. Places above about 2,500 m — Chitkul, Kalpa and Spiti — are not suitable soon after heart, lung or major surgery. Drive times from Chandigarh are approximate; we break long journeys with an overnight stop.

Tirthan Valley Kullu District · About 1,600 M
The gateway to the Great Himalayan National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Tirthan river runs clear and fast past wooden houses built in the old kath-kuni style, and many families in villages like Gushaini run warm, simple homestays. Mornings are for birdsong and short walks by the water; evenings for home-cooked Himachali food.

Jibhi Banjar, Kullu District · About 1,900 M
A cluster of hamlets in deep cedar and oak forest, a short drive from Tirthan. Streams, a small waterfall and wooden temples make it one of the most restful places in the state, and the drive up towards Jalori Pass opens on wide Himalayan views.

Barot Mandi District · About 1,800 M
A small village on the Uhl river, known for its trout and its century-old hydel history, with forests of cedar and pine on every side. Barot is green, uncrowded and slow — a place where a recovering patient and a tired family can simply rest.

Prashar Lake Mandi District · About 2,700 M
A high meadow lake with a three-tiered pagoda temple dedicated to the sage Parashar, and a small island of turf that drifts across the water. On clear days the Dhauladhar and Pir Panjal ranges line the horizon. Best as a day visit from Mandi rather than an overnight stay for patients.

Khajjiar Chamba District · About 1,900 M
A wide saucer-shaped meadow ringed by deodar forest near Dalhousie, often called India's "mini Switzerland". Flat, open and easy to walk, it suits families with elders and children, and the old hill town of Dalhousie is a short drive away.

Kalpa Kinnaur District · About 2,900 M
An old village of apple orchards and carved temples looking straight across at the Kinner Kailash peaks, which turn gold at sunrise. A journey for companions and recovered patients rather than a recovery stay — the altitude needs care.

Chitkul Sangla, Kinnaur District · About 3,450 M
Often called the last village before the Tibet border, Chitkul sits at the head of the Baspa valley among potato fields, wooden houses and snow peaks. Unforgettable for families travelling with a patient who has fully recovered.

Spiti Valley Lahaul and Spiti · About 3,800 M at Kaza
A cold desert of whitewashed monasteries, the most famous being Key, said to date back around a thousand years. Spiti is a journey of a lifetime for the healthy and acclimatised — we plan it over several days with rest stops, never as a recovery stay.
Staying with Himalayan Families
Through our Pay If You Can community programme, we help village families build safe, comfortable homestays — roofs, basic facilities, internet and a website — and then send them guests. Staying with them means home-cooked food, local guides and money that stays in the valley. Ask us about Himalayan retreats and Ayurveda, or read why we start every journey in Chandigarh.
