Medical Travel Scams to Avoid, and How to Spot Them

Fake visa sites, deposits to personal accounts, guaranteed cures and organ offers: the medical travel scams to avoid in India, and what to check first.

The message comes at night, on WhatsApp, from a number with a hospital's logo as its picture. "Special price for you, surgery next week, guaranteed success. Send the deposit today to hold the slot." Most people who travel for treatment meet honest doctors and helpful staff. But the few traps that exist are predictable — and every one of them can be avoided.

Fake visa websites and "visa agents"

Search "India medical visa" and the first results may not be the government. Some private sites copy the look of the official portal, charge extra fees and sometimes never file the application. In July 2023 India's Minister of State for Home told the Lok Sabha that unauthorised websites were trying to facilitate e-visas "through fraudulent means", and that the Bureau of Immigration was referring them to CERT-In for blocking. Indian embassies, including the mission in Kuwait in November 2025, have repeated the warning.

  • Apply only at indianvisaonline.gov.in. Type the address yourself.
  • The e-Medical visa needs a hospital letter; a genuine hospital sends it directly, without charging for it.
  • No one can "guarantee" a visa. Only the Government of India decides.

Our medical visa guide walks through the real process.

Money traps: deposits, bait prices and personal accounts

The most common loss is not dramatic. It is a deposit paid to the wrong place, or a price that grows after you land.

  • Personal bank accounts. A hospital invoices from its own name. If you are asked to pay an individual's account, stop.
  • Bait prices. A quote far below every other — with no days, room or implant listed — usually grows at admission. Our line-by-line comparison exposes it.
  • "Today only" pressure. Real surgical slots do not vanish overnight. Urgency is a sales tool.
  • Cash on arrival, no receipt. Always ask for a receipt in the hospital's name.
  • Surprise "package upgrades". If the price changes after you arrive, ask for the reason in writing, line by line, before signing anything.

Medical red flags

Some offers are not scams in the criminal sense, but they still put you at risk.

  • Guaranteed cures. Especially for "stem cell" therapies offered outside approved clinical trials, or for advanced cancer. Ask whether the treatment is part of a registered trial and approved by an ethics committee.
  • A diagnosis before reports. An honest doctor needs your scans, tests and history first.
  • No doctor's name. "Our senior surgeon" is not a name. Every doctor in India must be registered; see how to check.
  • Organ offers. Any offer to arrange a paid donor is a crime. In July 2024 Delhi Police reported breaking up a kidney racket involving patients and donors from Bangladesh. Legal transplants for foreign patients involve a related donor, documents from your embassy and approval by an authorisation committee — see our transplant guide.

Fake reviews, look-alike sites and touts

Glowing reviews with no names, sites that use a famous hospital's photos without its address, and "coordinators" who approach you in hospital lobbies offering to "speed things up" are all worth a second look. A real facilitator can tell you who they are, where they are registered, and how they are paid. Our ten questions for any facilitator help.

Before you pay anyone
  1. Name the doctorFull name, registration number, state council.
  2. Name the hospitalExact branch, and check its accreditation.
  3. Get it in writingAn itemised estimate on hospital letterhead.
  4. Pay the hospitalTo an account in the hospital's own name, with a receipt.
  5. Use official sitesVisas only at indianvisaonline.gov.in.
  6. Sleep on itNo real offer expires tonight.

If something feels wrong

Stop paying, keep every message and receipt, and ask someone independent to look. If a visa site has taken money, report it to your bank and to the Indian mission in your country. If a person claims to be a doctor, check the medical register. And if you are already in India and worried, call the hospital's international patient desk directly from the number on its official website.

It also helps to know what normal looks like, so the unusual stands out. A genuine hospital or facilitator asks for your reports before quoting. It names the doctor and the hospital branch. It sends an estimate that lists what is included and what is not, and explains how extra days are charged. It invoices from its own registered name. It answers questions in writing, and it does not mind if you take a week to decide or ask another doctor for a second opinion. If an offer does all of that, the price is the only thing left to compare.

And be kind to yourself. People who are frightened about an illness are exactly the people scammers target, because worry makes speed feel like safety. Taking a breath is not wasting time; it is part of making a good decision for your family.

We built BookMedTrip to remove these traps: named doctors, written estimates, payments to hospitals, and no commission that pushes surgery. Read how we check, or talk to our team before you pay anyone.

پرسش‌ها

What is the official website for an Indian medical visa?

Only indianvisaonline.gov.in. India's Home Ministry has warned that look-alike sites charge extra and may not file your application.

How can I tell if a medical tourism offer is a scam?

Warning signs include guaranteed results, a diagnosis before your reports are seen, no named doctor, pressure to pay today, and requests to pay a personal bank account.

Can a foreigner buy a kidney in India?

No. Buying or selling organs is illegal in India. Foreign patients can receive a transplant from a related donor with embassy documents and approval from an authorisation committee.
