NABH vs JCI Accreditation: What Each Badge Really Means

NABH and JCI hospital accreditation explained: what each badge checks, entry-level vs full NABH, and how to verify a hospital in India in ten minutes.

Two hospital websites, two shiny logos in the corner. One says NABH, the other says JCI, and a third hospital you were told about says "NABH certified" in smaller letters. They look like the same promise. They are not quite. Here is what each badge really means, and how to check it yourself in about ten minutes.

What accreditation actually checks

Accreditation is an outside inspection of how a hospital runs, not a prize for its best surgeon. Assessors look at systems: how patients are admitted and handed over between teams, how medicines are stored and given, how infections are prevented, how mistakes are reported and learned from, and whether patients are told their rights and the cost of care.

NABH's current hospital standards, the 6th edition, became the basis for every new application from 1 January 2025. They run to 10 chapters and 100 standards, from "Access, Assessment and Continuity of Care" to "Information Management System", broken into 639 objective elements. A hospital has to score well on the core elements at every visit, not just once.

That is the strength of accreditation: it tells you a hospital has working safety routines and is willing to be inspected. What it cannot tell you is how often a particular surgeon does your operation, or how their results compare. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention puts it plainly: accreditation does not guarantee a good outcome.

For an international patient, a few chapters matter more than the rest. "Patient Rights and Education" covers consent, privacy and being told the expected cost before treatment. "Infection Prevention and Control" covers hand hygiene, sterilisation and isolation — important, because the CDC notes that infection is the most common complication after treatment abroad. And "Continuity of Care" covers handovers and discharge, which is where your records and your doctor at home come in.

Accreditation is also not a one-off event. Under the 6th edition, some checkpoints are assessed at the first visit, others at surveillance visits during the four-year cycle, and a final group only at re-accreditation. A hospital that lets its systems slip between visits risks losing the badge.

NABH, entry-level and JCI: three different badges

BadgeWho awards itWhat it tells you
NABH accreditedNational Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers (India)The full national standard, with on-site assessment and surveillance visits. Its standards are themselves accredited by ISQua, the international body that checks accreditors.
NABH entry-level / "certified"NABH (the HOPE programme)A first step towards full accreditation, with fewer requirements. Useful, but not the same as full accreditation.
JCI accreditedJoint Commission International (USA)An international standard, familiar to many insurers abroad. Held by a few dozen Indian hospitals, mostly large private groups.

NABH facilities by level (late 2024)
Full accreditation2,491
Entry-level certification12,534

NABH data reported by ThePrint, 13 October 2024. Includes hospitals and smaller facilities.

The gap in that chart is the reason to read the badge closely. Five times more facilities hold entry-level certification than full accreditation. Neither is a warning sign, but for major surgery we look for full accreditation as the baseline. JCI is not "better" than NABH; it is a different framework, and an NABH hospital may suit your condition better than a JCI one across town.

How to check a badge yourself

Checking a hospital's accreditation in ten minutes
  1. Note the exact name and cityLarge groups have many branches; accreditation belongs to one site.
  2. Search the official listNABH's portal lists accredited hospitals; JCI has a public search of accredited organisations.
  3. Read the levelFull accreditation or entry-level certification?
  4. Check the datesLook for a valid-until date on the certificate, not just a logo.
  5. Ask about your departmentAccreditation covers the hospital's systems, not each surgeon's results.
  • Logos are easy to copy. A certificate number and expiry date are harder to fake. Ask for both in writing.
  • Branch matters. "Accredited group" does not mean every hospital in the group is accredited.
  • Laboratory badges are separate. NABL accreditation covers testing labs, not surgery or ward care.

What to ask beyond the badge

Once accreditation is confirmed, the useful questions move from the building to the team. How many times a year does this surgeon do your procedure? Who looks after you at 2 a.m. if something changes? Is there an intensive care unit and blood bank on site? What does the hospital measure about its own results, and will it share those figures? Does it have an international patient desk, interpreters if you need one, and a named coordinator who will answer your family's calls? Our guide to hospital outcomes data covers those questions in detail.

Our team checks every hospital and doctor before a name reaches you — read how in Trust as a Service — and our calm framework for choosing a hospital shows where accreditation fits. If you already have a hospital in mind, send us its name and we will tell you what we find.

پرسش‌ها

Is JCI better than NABH?

Not necessarily. JCI is an international framework and NABH is India's national one; NABH's standards are themselves accredited by ISQua. The right hospital depends on its experience with your condition, not on which badge it holds.

What is the difference between NABH accredited and NABH certified?

Full NABH accreditation means the hospital met the complete standard after on-site assessment. Entry-level certification is a first step with fewer requirements. For major surgery, look for full accreditation.

How do I check if a hospital in India is NABH accredited?

Search the hospital's exact name and branch on the NABH portal's list of accredited organisations, and ask the hospital for its certificate number and valid-until date.
