The physio's message arrives late at night: the scan is back, the season is on hold, and the club wants a plan by Friday. For many athletes outside Europe and North America, the next question is where to be treated quickly, well and quietly. This guide explains how sports medicine in India works for visiting athletes, coaches and clubs — and how to plan it without surprises.
What sports medicine in India covers
Sports medicine is wider than surgery. A good team brings together a sports and arthroscopy surgeon, a sports physician, a physiotherapist who works with athletes, a radiologist who reads musculoskeletal MRI every day, and — when needed — a nutritionist and a strength coach.
Visiting athletes most often come to India for:
- Knee injuries: ACL tears, meniscus tears and cartilage damage. Our ACL guide covers reconstruction in detail.
- Shoulder injuries: dislocations, labral tears and rotator cuff tears in throwers, swimmers, bowlers and contact athletes.
- Ankle and tendon injuries: Achilles ruptures, ankle ligament instability and stubborn tendon pain.
- Back problems in young athletes: stress fractures in fast bowlers, gymnasts and javelin throwers.
- Structured rehabilitation: a supervised block of physiotherapy and return-to-play testing after surgery done at home or in India.
Not every injury needs an operation. Many partial tendon tears, muscle strains and first-time sprains do well with rehabilitation alone. We would rather you pay for an honest review than for a surgery you did not need.

How an athlete plans treatment in India
The order of steps matters more than speed. A clear plan protects your season, your contract and your anti-doping record.
- Send your scansMRI images (not only the report), X-rays and the physio notes
- Specialist reviewUS$99 — two calls with a sports surgeon or physician
- Written plan and estimatesurgery or rehab, length of stay, price per person
- Anti-doping checkevery medicine and injection checked against the WADA List
- Treatment in Indiasurgery or a supervised rehab block
- Handover homeEnglish reports, imaging, rehab plan for your club physio
Bring the people who will carry the rehab after you leave. Clubs often send a physio or strength coach for the first week, so the handover happens face to face. Package prices are per person and exclude flights; a travelling physio is priced separately.
Most international athletes fly into Delhi. Chandigarh is about an hour away by air — a calm, green, planned city, close to the cool Himalayan foothills for the later weeks of rehab. Read rehab in the Himalayan foothills for that part of the plan.
Privacy for public figures
A national-team player or a well-known name has different worries from a weekend runner. Rumours can move markets, transfer talks and selection. We plan for that from the first call.
- Discreet scheduling: appointments, scans and admission can be arranged at quieter times, with as few people involved as possible.
- Private rooms on request: a single room, priced in your estimate, so you are not on a shared ward.
- No name, no photo: we never use an athlete's name, image or story in our marketing without written consent — and we do not ask for it.
- One point of contact: your agent, team doctor or family member can be named as the only person who receives updates.
Hospitals keep their own records under Indian law, and you will still sign their consent forms. What we control is how we handle your information: shared only with the doctors treating you, and with nobody else without your permission.

What it costs
| Knee arthroscopy · top | 2,630 |
|---|---|
| Knee arthroscopy · low | 737 |
| Rotator cuff · top | 1,895 |
| Rotator cuff · low | 947 |
CARE Hospitals published ranges: rotator cuff ₹90,000–1,80,000; knee arthroscopy ₹70,000–2,50,000 (checked October 2026), converted at ₹95 per US$. Hospitals say these are guides, not quotes.
Inside any range, the price moves with the implant or anchors used, the room, the length of stay and how much rehabilitation you do in India. Ask for a written estimate that names the procedure, the implants and what is included. If your club or insurer pays, ask early what paperwork they need.
For longer rehab blocks, our Hoppers long stays start from US$999 a month with three meals — useful when you need four to eight weeks of daily physiotherapy near the clinic.
India's growing sports-medicine ecosystem
India is investing in athlete care. On 8 July 2026, the Sports Authority of India signed a memorandum of understanding with the Safdarjung Sports Injury Centre in New Delhi, a government centre under the Ministry of Health. The agreement covers sports science, sports medicine, athlete rehabilitation, injury prevention, research and standardised clinical protocols, according to DD News.
Cricket has its own investment. In September 2024 the BCCI opened its Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, a campus of more than 40 acres with a dedicated sports science and medicine facility, also open to leading Indian Olympians.
These are government and sporting bodies, not BookMedTrip partners. They matter to you because they are growing a generation of Indian surgeons, physicians and physios who treat elite athletes every week. Start with our sports medicine guide, see how we vet doctors, or book a consultation.

پرسشها
Can a professional athlete be treated privately in India?
Yes. Appointments can be scheduled discreetly, private rooms can be booked on request, and we never use an athlete's name or photo without written consent.
Do I need surgery for every sports injury?
No. Many partial tears, strains and first-time sprains recover with structured rehabilitation. A specialist review of your MRI images tells you which group you are in.
How do athletes avoid anti-doping problems when treated abroad?
Check every medicine and injection against the current WADA Prohibited List before you take it, and apply for a therapeutic use exemption when a prohibited substance is truly needed.
