Chandigarh

Chandigarh, City of Learning: Universities on a Map

Why Chandigarh is a great learning city: literacy, PGIMER, Panjab University and ten Tricity institutes on one map — and why it matters for patients.

Walk around Sector 14 at nine in the morning and you will be swept along by students — on bicycles, on scooters, arguing cheerfully over chai. Chandigarh is one of India's great learning cities, and that energy is part of why patients feel safe and looked after here.

A city built for learning

Chandigarh was planned from scratch after 1951 by a team led by the architect Le Corbusier and inaugurated in 1953. The plan gave education its own space: the university and the medical institute sit side by side at the head of the city, next to the Capitol Complex, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Together with Mohali and Panchkula — the Tricity — it now holds national science institutes, two large private universities and dozens of colleges. That means doctors who teach, hospitals that train, and a young, English-speaking city.

Why it matters for your health

  • Teaching hospitals: PGIMER and the Government Medical College train specialists every year, and many private-hospital doctors trained here.
  • Research nearby: pharmaceutical (NIPER), microbial (IMTECH) and basic science (IISER) institutes bring laboratories and specialists to the region.
  • Second opinions: a dense network of senior specialists makes it easy to get two independent views without travelling far.
  • Communication: English is widely spoken in hospitals, shops and taxis.

How the plan helps you

Le Corbusier divided Chandigarh into numbered sectors, each about 800 by 1,200 metres. Every sector was meant to be a small, walkable neighbourhood with its own market, school, park and health centre. For a visitor that means daily needs — a pharmacy, a grocer, a café — are usually a short walk from where you stay.

Fast roads run between sectors, not through them, so streets inside are quiet. A long green belt, the Leisure Valley, runs through the city with gardens such as the Rose Garden in Sector 16. And Sukhna Lake, at the city's head, gives everyone a place to walk at dawn.

One honest note: like the rest of north India, Chandigarh's air can be poor on some winter days. It is usually cleaner than Delhi's, but if you have lung or heart disease, ask us about timing your trip.

A young city, a gentle pace

Students give the city its rhythm: busy cafés in Sectors 7, 8 and 10, music and theatre at Tagore Theatre, and long evening walks at Sukhna Lake. Yet the city stays calm — wide roads, green belts between sectors, and a culture of early mornings in the parks.

For a patient, that mix is ideal: lively enough that families never feel bored, quiet enough to rest. See our guide to food and evenings in Chandigarh and the best areas to stay.

If you are visiting

Getting here is simple. Chandigarh International Airport (IXC) has daily domestic flights and international routes to the Gulf, and Delhi is about an hour away by air or three to four hours by road or the fast Vande Bharat and Shatabdi trains. Inside the city, app cabs and auto-rickshaws reach most sectors in 15 minutes.

Panjab University's campus and its museums are worth a gentle walk. The Capitol Complex runs guided tours (book ahead). And the Rock Garden, built from recycled material, is a ten-minute ride away. Read why we chose Chandigarh, or start with a specialist consultation.
