It is easy to assume your travel insurance will cover you in India. For a trip taken for treatment, it usually won't. Here is what ordinary policies exclude, what specialist medical-travel cover can include, and how to compare policies calmly.

Why Ordinary Travel Insurance Usually Isn't Enough

Standard travel insurance is built for the unexpected — a lost bag, a broken ankle on holiday. Most policies exclude trips taken to obtain medical treatment, and complications of a planned procedure. Read your policy wording for phrases like "travelling for the purpose of medical treatment" before relying on it.

What Specialist Medical-Travel Cover Can Include

  • ComplicationsTreatment of complications from the declared procedure, within a stated period after it.
  • Extra timeAdditional hospital days, a longer stay, changed flights.
  • Companion costsSometimes a relative's travel and accommodation.
  • Evacuation and repatriationWhen it is medically necessary.

No policy pays for the planned treatment itself — that is covered by the hospital's written estimate you agree before booking.

Exclusions to Read Twice

  • Conditions you didn't declare — always declare everything, in writing.
  • Hospitals or doctors that don't meet the insurer's requirements — check that your hospital qualifies.
  • Not following medical advice, aftercare or fit-to-fly instructions.
  • Cosmetic procedures, and dissatisfaction with results.

Five Questions Before You Buy

  1. How long after the procedure are complications covered?
  2. Is any further surgery covered, up to what limit, and where must it happen?
  3. Does my chosen hospital meet the insurer's requirements?
  4. Are extended stays, changed flights and a companion included?
  5. Do I have written confirmation that my declared conditions are covered?

How We Help

We gather the documents insurers ask for — the treatment plan, the hospital's accreditation and the written estimate — and help you compare options. The policy is always between you and the insurer, and we don't receive commission for recommending one. If you already have health insurance that covers treatment abroad, many Indian hospitals can work with international insurers; ask us to check before you travel.

Insurance in India is regulated by IRDAI. If you buy a policy in your own country, it is regulated there.

ਲੋਕ ਜੋ ਪੁੱਛਦੇ ਹਨ

Will my normal travel insurance cover my operation?

Almost certainly not. Standard policies are designed for unexpected events and usually exclude trips taken to obtain treatment, and complications of planned procedures.

What should a medical-travel policy include?

Look for complication cover for a stated period after surgery, extra hospital days, extended stay and flight changes, companion costs and emergency repatriation.

Can BookMedTrip arrange insurance?

We can help you understand options and gather the documents insurers ask for. The policy is always between you and the insurer.
