Hair Transplant in India: FUE vs FUT and Choosing Safely

Hair transplant in India explained: FUE vs FUT, who is a good candidate, how to choose a qualified surgeon safely, typical costs and realistic results.

It starts with the bathroom mirror and a slightly wider parting, or a hairline that has crept back since the last family photo. Hair loss is common and harmless to health, but it can hurt confidence. A hair transplant can help the right person — and harm the wrong one in the wrong clinic. This guide explains the options, how to choose a surgeon, and what results really look like.

Is a transplant right for you?

A transplant moves healthy follicles from the back and sides of the scalp — the “donor area”, which is resistant to pattern hair loss — to thinning areas. It cannot create new hair; it redistributes what you have. So the best candidates have:

  • stable pattern hair loss, rather than loss that is still racing ahead;
  • a good donor area with enough density;
  • realistic expectations about density and hairline;
  • good general health, with diabetes and blood pressure under control.

Some kinds of hair loss need a different approach first: patchy alopecia areata, thinning caused by thyroid problems, anaemia or medicines, and scarring conditions. A dermatologist should diagnose the cause. Many people also benefit from medical treatment, such as minoxidil or finasteride, to protect the hair they still have — ask about the pros and cons.

FUE vs FUT

  • FUE (follicular unit extraction): individual follicular units are taken one by one with a tiny punch, leaving small dot scars hidden in short hair. Recovery is quick; the donor area is usually shaved.
  • FUT (follicular unit transplantation, or “strip”): a thin strip of scalp is removed from the back and divided into grafts under microscopes, then the wound is stitched, leaving a fine linear scar. It can yield many grafts in one session and keeps longer hair intact.

Many clinics now combine methods, or use body hair from the beard or chest when the scalp donor area is limited. Some also offer platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections alongside surgery; the evidence for these is mixed, so ask what they add for you and what they cost.

Neither is “better” for everyone. The surgeon’s skill, the planning of the hairline and the care taken with each graft matter more than the name of the technique.

Choosing a qualified surgeon

This is the most important section. In 2022, the National Medical Commission’s ethics board said hair transplants should be done by properly trained, registered medical practitioners — recommending plastic surgeons and dermatologists with surgical training — and that untrained people should not perform them. In 2025, two patients died after hair transplants at a clinic in Kanpur, prompting experts to warn about unsafe anaesthesia and unqualified operators. Worldwide, the ISHRS reports that more patients are seeking repair of botched surgery.

Before you book, check:

  • Who operates. The doctor’s name, qualification and registration number — and who does each step on the day. Technicians assist; they should not run the surgery.
  • Safety checks. Blood tests including clotting, blood sugar, and an ECG where appropriate; anaesthesia doses managed by a qualified doctor.
  • A proper consultation, including your donor area, hairline design and graft estimate — not just a price per graft.
  • Real results. Before-and-after photos taken in similar light at 12 months, with patient consent.

Price alone should never decide. Cheap packages that promise thousands of grafts in a day can over-harvest the donor area, which cannot be undone.

Realistic results and recovery

  1. Day of surgery: usually a long day under local anaesthesia; you go home the same evening.
  2. Days 1–10: small crusts and some swelling; gentle washing as instructed. Most people return to desk work within a week.
  3. Weeks 2–8: the transplanted hairs usually shed. This is expected — the follicles remain.
  4. Months 3–4: new growth begins, fine at first.
  5. Around a year: most of the result is visible; it keeps maturing for some months after.

Expect a few practical restrictions in the first weeks: sleeping with your head raised for a few nights, no swimming, no heavy exercise, no direct sun on the grafts, and no tight caps until the surgeon says so. Smoking slows healing, so stop well before and after. Most people find the recovery easier than they feared.

A trip of four or five days is usually enough, with a check the morning after surgery before you fly. Chandigarh, about an hour from Delhi by air, is a quiet base for that first week.

Results look natural when the hairline suits your age and face. A good surgeon will design for how you will look at 50 and 60, not only next year. Prices are per person and exclude flights. Read dental, eye and cosmetic costs and what I would verify before choosing a clinic, see how we vet doctors, or book a consultation.

Who should perform a hair transplant in India?

A trained, registered doctor. India’s National Medical Commission recommends plastic surgeons and dermatologists with surgical training; untrained people should not perform them.

Is FUE better than FUT?

Neither is best for everyone. FUE leaves tiny dot scars and recovers quickly; FUT leaves a fine linear scar but can yield many grafts and keeps longer hair.

When will I see results after a hair transplant?

Transplanted hairs usually shed within weeks, regrow from about three to four months, and most of the result shows at around a year.
