Bringing Your Pet to India During Treatment

For many people, a pet is family — and recovery is easier with them close by. Bringing a dog or cat to India is possible, but it takes paperwork and planning that should start at least two months before you fly.

The Essentials

• Up to two pets per passengerDogs and cats, up to two per passenger at one time. More than two needs an import permit.
• Health certificateAn original certificate from a vet, stating the animal is free from the diseases India lists (for dogs including rabies, distemper, leptospirosis and others; for cats, rabies and distemper).
• Rabies vaccinationGiven at least 30 days before travel and not more than a year before — even if your country accepts a three-year vaccine.
• MicrochipImported pets should be microchipped.
• No Objection CertificateObtained from India's Animal Quarantine and Certification Services (AQCS) before arrival — the guidance says 15 days before.
• Arrival airportPets are cleared by AQCS officers at Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai and Kolkata. For Chandigarh, pets usually arrive in Delhi and continue by road with you.

A Timeline That Works

• 8 weeks beforeCheck the microchip; book your vet; confirm your airline's pet policy and crate size.
• 4–6 weeks beforeRabies vaccination if needed (at least 30 days before travel).
• 3 weeks beforeApply for the AQCS No Objection Certificate — a pet relocation agent can help.
• Final daysVet health certificate, copies of your passport, ticket and airway bill if your pet flies as cargo.
• ArrivalPresent your pet to the quarantine officer at customs; we meet you and drive you both to Chandigarh.
