Spinal Fusion Surgery in India: When It Helps, What It Costs

Spinal fusion in India: which spine problems it treats, why it is not for plain back pain, non-surgical options, published costs and a recovery plan.

A scan report arrives with a phrase that sounds frightening: “grade 2 spondylolisthesis”. A surgeon at home mentions fusion. The family starts searching, and the questions pile up — is it necessary, is it safe, can it wait? Spinal fusion helps some people a great deal. For others it is the wrong operation. This guide helps you tell the difference.

What fusion does, and when it helps

Spinal fusion joins two or more vertebrae so they heal into one solid bone. Screws, rods and a spacer (a “cage”) hold the bones still while bone graft grows across the gap over the following months. The aim is to stop painful or dangerous movement, or to hold the spine in a better position.

Surgeons consider it for specific problems: one vertebra slipping forward on another (spondylolisthesis) with trapped nerves, instability after an injury or earlier surgery, some fractures, tumours and infections, spinal deformity, and certain neck conditions where a worn disc presses on the spinal cord.

What fusion is generally not for is ordinary low back pain. The UK’s National Institute for Health and Care Excellence is blunt: do not offer spinal fusion for low back pain unless as part of a randomised controlled trial. We agree with that caution, and so do the spine surgeons we work with.

What to try before surgery

For most back and neck problems, the first steps are not surgical. They include a structured exercise programme with a physiotherapist, pain relief, weight management, staying active, and sometimes an injection to calm an irritated nerve. If your pain is mainly from a slipped disc and sciatica, read our story on physio first, surgery if needed.

Some symptoms need urgent attention wherever you are: new weakness in a leg, numbness around the buttocks, or loss of bladder or bowel control. Those are not reasons to plan a trip — they are reasons to go to an emergency department now.

Fusion also has a trade-off worth understanding. Joining two vertebrae removes movement at that level, and the levels above and below take on a little more work. Surgeons weigh this carefully, especially in younger patients, and some problems can be treated by freeing a trapped nerve (decompression) without fusing at all. Ask whether a smaller operation would do the job.

US: Sidecar Health average cash prices by state (excludes anaesthesia, imaging and other doctors’ fees). India: PACE Hospitals ₹2.3–6 lakh, complex or revision ₹9.4 lakh+ (June 2026), converted at ₹95 per US$. Indian figures are hospital-published estimates, not quotes; your own estimate comes after a doctor reviews your reports.

The number of levels fused, the approach (open, minimally invasive or robotic-assisted), the implants and your room move the price most. A single-level lumbar fusion sits at the lower end; multi-level, revision and deformity surgery cost more. Ask for the implant list in writing.

From scan to flight home

How a spinal fusion trip usually runs
  1. Send your MRI and X-raysIncluding standing and bending X-rays if you have them
  2. Two opinionsA spine surgeon reviews; a second surgeon can confirm whether fusion is really needed
  3. Arrival and testsBlood tests, ECG, anaesthetist review
  4. SurgeryUsually 3–5 nights in hospital
  5. Walking on day one or twoWith a physiotherapist, often in a brace if the surgeon advises
  6. Recovery stayAbout two weeks of walking, wound checks and teaching
  7. Final reviewX-ray, discharge summary and a written activity plan
  8. Fly homeYour surgeon decides when; an aisle seat helps

Most people fly into Delhi; Chandigarh is about an hour away by air. Its shaded avenues and parks suit the short, frequent walks that spinal recovery depends on.

Questions to ask a spine surgeon

  • What exactly is the problem fusion will fix — and how will we know it worked?
  • What happens if I wait, or keep going with physiotherapy?
  • How many levels, which approach, and which implants?
  • How often do you do this operation?
  • What are the main risks for someone like me, including the chance of needing more surgery later?
  • When can I sit for a long flight, return to work and lift?

Bring every earlier scan and report you have, even old ones. Spine surgeons compare images over time, and a curve or slip that has not changed in five years tells a different story from one that changed last spring. If you have had spine surgery before, the original operation note is gold.

Bone takes months to fuse. Expect a gradual return to normal life, guided by your surgeon and a physiotherapist at home. Explore our spine and neuro guide, why we start with a second opinion before surgery, or book a consultation and send us your scans.

How much does spinal fusion cost in India?

PACE Hospitals publishes ₹2.3–6 lakh (about US$2,400–6,300) for most fusions, and ₹9.4 lakh or more for complex or revision surgery. The number of levels and the implants change the price most.

Is spinal fusion a good treatment for back pain?

Not for ordinary low back pain. UK NICE guidance says not to offer fusion for low back pain outside a trial. Fusion is used for specific problems such as slipped vertebrae with trapped nerves, instability, deformity or fractures.

How soon can I fly after spinal fusion?

Many patients fly two to three weeks after surgery, but your surgeon decides, based on your wound, walking and pain.
