The bus climbs out of the plains, the air cools, and suddenly the Dhauladhar range is right there — white peaks above deodar forest. Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj have drawn slow travellers for decades. For our Hoppers community, it is one of the best places in India to live, work and breathe for a month.
What it feels like
Two towns share one hillside. Lower Dharamshala is a Himachali hill town with markets, offices and the famous cricket stadium. Upper McLeod Ganj is Tibetan in spirit: prayer wheels, monks in maroon robes, momos and butter tea, and the Tsuglagkhang temple complex.
Above them, Dharamkot and Bhagsu are where many long-stay travellers settle — quiet lanes, rooftop cafés with mountain views, and yoga and meditation classes most mornings.

- Triund: a full-day hike; start early and check the weather. Not for the first weeks after any surgery.
- Norbulingka: a peaceful place to watch traditional thangka painting and woodwork.
- Kangra Fort and Masroor rock-cut temples: easy half-day trips by taxi.
Living and working here
Most Hoppers stay four to twelve weeks. What to know:
- Internet: 4G and 5G mobile data cover the towns; many guesthouses and cafés offer Wi-Fi. Keep a mobile hotspot as backup during storms.
- Seasons: March–June and September–November are the most comfortable. The monsoon (July–August) is very wet; winter nights drop near freezing.
- Health: Dharamshala has a zonal hospital and private clinics; for anything specialist, Chandigarh is a day's drive or a short flight away via Delhi.
- Visa: stay within your visa's rules. India has no dedicated digital-nomad visa, so check the official e-Visa portal for what yours allows.
Staying well in the hills
- Altitude: about 2,000 metres is not high enough for most people to feel altitude sickness, but take the first day easy and drink water.
- Steep lanes: McLeod Ganj is hilly. If you have knee, heart or breathing problems, choose a stay close to the main road and use taxis.
- Water: drink filtered or bottled water; many cafés refill bottles to cut plastic.
- Monkeys and dogs: do not feed them and keep food out of sight on trails.
- Insurance: make sure your travel cover includes trekking if you plan to hike to Triund.
A sample Hopper week
- Mon–Wedyoga at 7, laptop work 9–2 in a café, afternoon walk to Bhagsu or Naddi
- Thursdayhalf-day visit to Norbulingka and lower Dharamshala markets
- FridayTibetan cooking class or volunteer English conversation
- Saturdayearly start for the Triund hike, back by evening
- Sundayrest, laundry, momos with new friends
Getting there: fly Delhi–Kangra (about 1.5 hours), take an overnight Volvo bus from Delhi or Chandigarh, or come by road from Chandigarh in about six hours with a stop at the tea gardens of Palampur on a longer route. We arrange pick-ups from Kangra airport for Hoppers.
Food and local manners
You will eat well: Tibetan momos and thukpa, Himachali dham on festival days, Israeli and Italian cafés, and fresh mountain vegetables. Two things matter. Beef is not part of local food and cow slaughter is banned by Himachal Pradesh law, so do not ask for it. And at temples and monasteries, walk clockwise around prayer wheels and stupas, remove shoes where asked and dress modestly.
