She packs the small suitcase first: loose trousers, slip-on shoes, the folder of X-rays. Her hip has made the decision for her — the stairs, the sleepless nights, the walks she no longer takes. What she still wants is a plan. This guide is that plan, written the way we explain it to families on our first call.
Who usually needs a new hip
Most hip replacements are done for osteoarthritis — the smooth cartilage in the ball-and-socket joint wears away until bone grinds on bone. Other reasons include rheumatoid arthritis, an old fracture that healed badly, or avascular necrosis, where the head of the thigh bone loses its blood supply.
An X-ray tells the surgeon how damaged the joint is. Your daily life tells the rest. Surgeons usually talk about a new hip when pain wakes you at night, limits how far you can walk, or stays bad despite months of sensible treatment: weight management, pain medicines, walking aids and physiotherapy.
There is no prize for having surgery early, and no prize for suffering longer than you need to. A good surgeon will tell you honestly which side of that line you are on. That is why we always begin with a specialist review of your X-rays and history — a US$99 consultation that includes two calls, so you can return to the same doctor with questions or ask a second surgeon for an opinion.
What it costs, and what changes the price

US: Turquoise Health average cash price across facilities (checked October 2026). India: CARE Hospitals published range ₹1.5–4.8 lakh, converted at ₹95 per US$. UK self-pay guide price: £16,135 (Nuffield Health Leeds).
Inside the Indian range, four things move your price most:
- The implant. Cemented or uncemented, metal or ceramic head, and the brand all matter. Ask for the brand and model in writing.
- The room. A twin-sharing room costs less than a private suite.
- Your health. Diabetes, heart disease or anaemia can mean extra tests or a longer stay.
- One hip or both. Some patients have both done in one admission; your surgeon decides if that is safe for you.
Package prices are per person and exclude flights. Your written estimate should list what is included — surgery, implant, hospital days, physiotherapy, medicines — and what is not.
Your three weeks in India, step by step
Most international patients fly into Delhi. Chandigarh is about an hour away by air, and it is a calm, green, planned city to recover in.
- Days 1–2: arrival, blood tests, ECG and a chest X-ray; you meet the surgeon, the anaesthetist and the physiotherapist.
- Day 3: surgery, usually under spinal anaesthesia. Many patients stand with help the same day or the next.
- Days 4–6: hospital physiotherapy — walking with a frame, climbing a practice step, learning the movements to avoid.
- Days 7–20: a quiet stay near the hospital, daily physiotherapy, wound checks and a gentle walking routine.
- Day 21: final review, an English discharge summary, implant sticker, X-ray copies and a home exercise plan. Your surgeon decides when it is safe to fly, and what blood-clot prevention you need for the journey.

Recovery walks are easier somewhere pleasant. In Chandigarh the flat, paved promenade at Sukhna Lake is a favourite once your physiotherapist allows longer walks.

Back home: the next three months
The operation takes a couple of hours; the recovery takes patience. Most people use a walking aid for a few weeks, then a stick, then nothing. Driving, swimming and returning to desk work usually come back over the following weeks, guided by your surgeon and home physiotherapist.
- Keep doing the exercises. They protect the new joint more than anything else.
- Take blood-thinning medicine exactly as prescribed.
- Call your doctor at once for fever, a hot, red wound, calf pain or sudden breathlessness.
- Book a review with a local orthopaedic surgeon, and carry your implant details whenever you travel.
Our care team stays in touch after you fly home, and your Indian surgeon remains reachable for questions.
Questions to ask your surgeon
- Which approach — posterior, lateral or anterior — and why for me?
- Which implant, cemented or not, and how long has it been in use?
- How many hip replacements do you and this hospital do each year?
- What is the infection-prevention routine in your theatre?
- Exactly what does the estimate include, and what might add to it?
Start with our joint replacement guide, compare costs side by side, read our knee replacement guide if both joints trouble you, or book a consultation and send us your X-rays.

How much does a hip replacement cost in India?
Published ranges are about ₹1.5–4.8 lakh (about US$1,600–5,050) for one total hip replacement. Your written estimate depends on the implant, the room and your health.
How long should I stay in India after a hip replacement?
We plan about three weeks, with daily physiotherapy. Your surgeon decides when it is safe to fly and what blood-clot prevention you need.
Will I be able to walk after hip replacement surgery?
Most patients stand with help within a day and walk with a frame within days. Full recovery takes weeks to months and depends on doing the exercises.
