Brain Tumour Surgery in India: Options, Costs, Recovery

Brain tumour treatment in India: watch-and-scan, surgery and radiosurgery explained, published costs by tumour type, the tumour board and recovery.

The word “tumour” on a scan report stops a family in its tracks. In the first days, it helps to know two things. Brain tumours are many different diseases — some slow-growing and harmless for years, some serious — and the right plan depends entirely on which one this is. And surgery is only one of several tools. This guide explains the path in plain words.

Not one disease, but many

Doctors first ask whether a tumour started in the brain or spread there from elsewhere, and whether it looks benign or malignant. Meningiomas, which grow from the brain’s lining, are often slow and benign. Pituitary tumours, acoustic neuromas and some childhood tumours each have their own specialists and their own rules. Gliomas, which grow from the brain’s supporting cells, range from slow to aggressive.

An MRI with contrast gives the first picture. Sometimes a specialised scan or a biopsy is needed before anyone can say what the tumour is. Ask for the full MRI images on a disc or download link, not just the written report — the neurosurgeon will want to see them.

Surgery, and the other options

  • Watch and scan. Small, slow-growing tumours that cause no symptoms — many meningiomas, for example — are often simply watched with regular MRIs.
  • Surgery. A craniotomy opens a small window in the skull to remove as much tumour as can be safely taken. Pituitary tumours are often removed through the nose with an endoscope instead.
  • Radiosurgery. Some small tumours can be treated with precisely focused radiation (such as Gamma Knife or CyberKnife) without opening the skull.
  • Radiotherapy and medicines. Many malignant tumours need radiotherapy and chemotherapy after surgery, planned around the tissue diagnosis.

Good centres discuss each case at a tumour board — neurosurgeons, oncologists, radiologists and pathologists around one table. Ask whether yours will be discussed this way. Our US$99 consultation includes two calls, so you can put your scans in front of one neurosurgeon and then, if you wish, a second.

India: PACE Hospitals estimates by tumour type, Hyderabad (2026), upper end of each range, converted at ₹95 per US$. US: Missios & Bekelis, median hospitalisation cost after craniotomy for tumour, National Inpatient Sample 2005–2010 — older data, not like for like. Indian figures are hospital-published estimates, not quotes; your own estimate comes after a doctor reviews your reports.

Price follows complexity: the tumour’s size and depth, whether navigation or awake surgery is needed, intensive-care days and any reconstruction. Radiotherapy and chemotherapy afterwards are separate and are priced once the pathology is known. Package prices are per person and exclude flights.

  3. Arrival and planning scansFresh MRI if needed, blood tests, anaesthetist review
  4. SurgeryOften 1–2 nights in intensive care, then the ward
  5. Pathology reportUsually takes several days; it names the tumour

  7. Recovery and follow-up planStitches out, a written plan for home
  8. Fly homeOnly when the neurosurgeon clears it

Most families arrive through Delhi; Chandigarh is about an hour away by air. Bring a family member who can stay throughout — after brain surgery you will want someone beside you for appointments, medicines and the long conversations about results.

After surgery: what to expect

Recovery depends on where the tumour was and what was done. Tiredness and headaches are common for weeks. Some people need physiotherapy, speech therapy or help with memory or balance. Many take anti-seizure medicine for a time. Flying soon after brain surgery needs specific clearance, so do not book a return date until your neurosurgeon gives it.

If further treatment is needed, you can often have it in India, or carry a detailed plan home for your own oncologist. We help with both, and our team keeps in touch either way.

Questions to ask the neurosurgeon

  • What do you think this tumour is, and how sure can we be before surgery?
  • What happens if we watch it instead?
  • How much can be removed safely, and what might be left?
  • What are the main risks for speech, movement or vision in my case?
  • Who reads the pathology, and how quickly?
  • What is likely to follow — radiotherapy, chemotherapy or scans only?

Read our spine and neuro guide, the cancer care guide, or book a consultation and send the MRI images.

How much does brain tumour surgery cost in India?

PACE Hospitals publishes about ₹1.5–7.5 lakh or more (about US$1,600–7,900), from small superficial tumours to complex skull-base surgery. Radiotherapy or chemotherapy afterwards is priced separately.

Does every brain tumour need surgery?

No. Some small, slow-growing tumours are watched with regular MRIs, and some are treated with radiosurgery without opening the skull. A neurosurgeon decides after seeing the scans.

How long should I stay in India after brain tumour surgery?

Often two to four weeks, including the wait for the pathology report and the tumour board’s plan. Your neurosurgeon decides when you can fly.
