Istanbul is a short flight from most of Europe, and Türkiye has built a big, well-marketed health-travel industry — especially for hair, teeth and cosmetic work. India is further for Europeans but closer for many others, and is a leader in complex surgery. Here is how they compare.
What Türkiye does very well
- Proximity to Europe: three to four hours from many European capitals, with a major hub airport in Istanbul.
- Focused packages: hair transplants, dental veneers and implants, cosmetic surgery, eye surgery and IVF, often sold as all-inclusive trips.
- Hotels and transfers: packages commonly bundle a hotel and airport pick-up.
What India does very well
- Complex care: cardiac surgery, organ transplants under the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act, cancer care, spine and neurosurgery.
- Cost: major surgery often costs less in India, and long-term medicines are affordable.
- Recovery options: Himalayan foothills, Ayurveda and yoga close to Chandigarh's hospitals.
- Communities: large diaspora and student communities from Africa, the Gulf and Central Asia make families feel at home.
A word on packages
All-inclusive packages are convenient, but they can hide what matters most. Whether you choose Türkiye or India, ask the same questions:
- Who operates? The named, registered surgeon — and which steps are done by technicians.
- How many patients per day? A clinic doing many procedures a day may give each one less time.
- What is included? Grafts or implants, medicines, follow-up visits, and what happens if something goes wrong.
- What happens at home? Records in English, a follow-up plan and a contact for questions.

Add up the whole trip
The cheapest package is not always the cheapest trip. Whichever country you choose, add up:
- Treatment: the itemised hospital or clinic estimate, including implants, grafts or medicines.
- Travel: flights for you and a companion, airport transfers and visas.
- Stay: nights before and after the procedure, plus spare days in case of delays.
- Aftercare: follow-up visits, dressings, physiotherapy and medicines at home.
- Time off work: for you and the person travelling with you.
Then ask what happens if you need extra care. A clear answer in writing is worth more than a discount.
Follow-up after you fly home
Short trips are attractive, but problems after hair, dental or cosmetic work usually show up weeks later — an infection, a loose crown, a scar that needs care. Before you book anywhere, agree how you will send photos, who will reply, and what a revision costs. For major surgery, plan video follow-up with your Indian surgeon and a local doctor who has your records. Our guide to complications abroad explains who pays when something goes wrong.

For London, Istanbul is closer. For Nairobi, Dubai, Tashkent and Dhaka, India is as close or closer — and Delhi is about an hour's flight from Chandigarh.
Our honest view
- Hair, teeth or cosmetic from Europe→ Türkiye is convenient; check the surgeon and clinic carefully
- Heart, transplant, cancer or spine→ India's high-volume centres are usually stronger and cheaper
- From Africa, Gulf, Central or South Asia→ India is often closer and more familiar
- Long recovery wanted→ India's Himalayan retreats suit slow recovery
- Unsure→ get two specialist opinions before you book
Families sometimes combine both: a cosmetic or dental procedure close to home in Europe, and major surgery where specialist volume and price are strongest. There is no rule that one destination must do everything. What matters is that each part of your care has a named doctor, a clear price and a follow-up plan.
Both countries have world-class doctors and some clinics to avoid. The safest choice is the one where you know exactly who treats you and what you pay. Book a US$99 consultation — two calls with specialists — and compare. Read the full destination comparison.
