The breathlessness crept up slowly — first on the stairs, then on the walk to the shop. An echo shows the reason: the aortic valve, the heart’s main exit door, has stiffened and narrowed. Years ago the only fix was open-heart surgery. Today many people can have a new valve placed through a blood vessel in the groin instead. This is TAVI.
What TAVI is
TAVI stands for transcatheter aortic valve implantation (in the US it is called TAVR, for replacement). A new valve, folded onto a thin tube, is guided from an artery — usually at the top of the leg — up to the heart. There it expands inside the old valve and starts working at once. There is no large chest cut and the heart is not stopped.
It treats severe aortic stenosis: a narrowed aortic valve that causes breathlessness, chest pain, dizziness or fainting. Medicines can ease symptoms, but they cannot open a narrowed valve.
Aortic stenosis usually comes with age, as calcium slowly builds up on the valve leaflets. Some people are born with a valve that has two leaflets instead of three, and it tends to wear out earlier. Because the change is gradual, many people put their tiredness down to getting older. If a doctor has heard a new murmur, an echocardiogram — a simple ultrasound of the heart — is the test that tells you how tight the valve has become.
Once symptoms appear, severe aortic stenosis is not something to leave for years. Equally, a valve that is only mildly or moderately narrowed is usually watched with regular echoes rather than treated. Knowing which group you are in is the first job of the specialist.
TAVI or open surgery?
This is a decision for a heart team — an interventional cardiologist and a cardiac surgeon, ideally together. They weigh your age, other health problems, the shape of your valve and arteries, and how long the new valve needs to last. Open surgical valve replacement remains an excellent choice for many people, especially younger patients. TAVI has made treatment possible for many older or higher-risk patients who could not face open surgery.
A detailed CT scan of the heart and arteries is essential before TAVI; it shows whether the valve can be reached through the leg and which size fits. Our US$99 consultation includes two calls, so a cardiologist can review your echo and a second specialist — for example a cardiac surgeon — can give their view.

What it costs
TAVI is expensive everywhere because the valve itself is costly. Yashoda Hospitals publishes ₹18–25 lakh (about US$18,900–26,300) in India. In the UK, Cleveland Clinic London lists a self-pay package from £66,000, excluding consultant and anaesthetist fees. Your price depends on the valve brand — imported or Indian-made — the hospital, and how many nights you need.
- Ask which valve brand and model is planned, and why.
- Ask whether the CT scan, the procedure, the valve and the first follow-up echo are all included.
- Ask what one extra day in intensive care or the ward would cost.
Package prices are per person and exclude flights. Compare like for like with our guide to comparing two hospital quotes.
Your two weeks, step by step
- Send your echo and lettersPlus ECG, medicines and any angiogram
- Heart-team reviewTAVI, open surgery or medicines — discussed on a call
- CT and tests in IndiaCT of heart and arteries, blood tests, dental check if needed
- The procedureOften under light sedation; about 1–2 hours
- Hospital stayUsually a few days, with a check for heart rhythm changes
- Echo before dischargeConfirms how the new valve is working
- Rest nearbyShort walks, wound check, medicines settled
- Fly homeWhen the cardiologist clears you
Bring a companion. After TAVI most people walk the next day, but you will still want someone to help with bags, airport transfers and the first nights in a hotel or serviced apartment. If you use a wheelchair at airports, ask your airline in advance — it is free and it saves energy.
Most people fly into Delhi; Chandigarh is about an hour by air. Some patients need a pacemaker after TAVI because the new valve sits close to the heart’s wiring; your team will tell you how likely that is for you.
After TAVI
Many people feel less breathless within days or weeks. You will take blood-thinning or antiplatelet medicine for a period, keep regular echo checks, and tell every dentist and doctor that you have an artificial valve. Infection of a heart valve is rare but serious, so good dental care matters.
Carry your valve card and discharge summary. Our team stays in touch after you fly home, and your Indian cardiologist remains reachable.
Questions to ask the heart team
- Is my aortic stenosis severe, and are my symptoms caused by it?
- Why TAVI rather than open surgery for me — or the other way round?
- Which valve, and how long do you expect it to last?
- How likely am I to need a pacemaker afterwards?
- How many TAVI procedures does your team do each year?

How much does TAVI cost in India?
Yashoda Hospitals publishes ₹18–25 lakh (about US$18,900–26,300). The valve brand is the biggest part of the price.
Who is suitable for TAVI instead of open-heart surgery?
A heart team of cardiologists and cardiac surgeons decides, weighing age, other illnesses and valve and artery anatomy shown on a CT scan.
How long do I stay in India for TAVI?
We usually plan about two weeks: tests, the procedure, a few days in hospital and a short rest before the cardiologist clears you to fly.
