Football and Rugby Injuries: Treatment in India for Clubs

For football and rugby clubs in Africa and the Gulf: common injuries, what the data show, prevention, and how to plan treatment and rehab in India.

The club doctor in Lagos, Nairobi or Muscat has the scan on a laptop and three questions from the chairman: how long, how much, and where. For many clubs in Africa and the Gulf, specialist sports surgery and structured rehabilitation at home can mean long waits or high prices abroad. India offers another option. Here is what football and rugby injuries look like today, and how a club can plan treatment here.

The injuries football clubs see most

The UEFA Elite Club Injury Study has followed 3,909 players from 54 teams in 20 countries over 21 seasons. Its clearest trend is the rise of the hamstring injury: from 12% of all injuries in the first season to 24% in 2021/22, with absence days rising too.

Alongside hamstrings, clubs deal with:

  • Knee injuries: ACL tears, meniscus tears and MCL sprains — see our ACL guide and meniscus guide.
  • Ankle sprains and impingement, and occasionally Achilles ruptures — see the Achilles guide.
  • Groin and hip pain from kicking and cutting.
  • Shoulder dislocations in goalkeepers.

Most muscle injuries are treated without surgery. A severe hamstring tear that pulls the tendon off the bone is an exception: it may need prompt repair, so an early specialist review of the MRI matters.

Rugby: contact, shoulders and concussion

Rugby adds collision to the picture. Shoulder dislocations, AC joint injuries, knee ligament tears, ankle sprains and hand injuries are all common. So is concussion. In the 2023–24 Irish Rugby Injury Surveillance report for men's All-Ireland League clubs, concussion was the most common match injury diagnosis, at 4.4 per 1,000 player hours.

For rugby forwards and backs alike, the shoulder deserves special attention. A first dislocation in a young player is likely to recur, and each recurrence can add damage — our shoulder guide explains the options.

Concussion is not something to fix with a flight to India. It is managed under your federation's graduated return-to-play protocol, close to home, by doctors who can see the player day by day. What we can help with is a specialist second opinion when symptoms last longer than expected.

How clubs use treatment in India

  • Scan second opinions: send MRI images and receive a written opinion from a sports surgeon within days.
  • Surgery: ACL reconstruction, meniscus repair, shoulder stabilisation and ankle procedures, with a written estimate before travel.
  • Rehabilitation blocks: two to eight weeks of supervised physiotherapy, with strength and hop testing where available.
  • Club-friendly paperwork: English reports, invoices to the club or insurer, and a handover plan for your physio.

Before you send a player, agree a few things in writing with the treating team:

  • the diagnosis, the recommended operation or rehab, and the reasons for it;
  • the implants or anchors, the room type and the total estimate per player;
  • how long the player must stay in India, and when the surgeon will clear him or her to fly;
  • the rehab milestones and tests your physio should use at home;
  • who receives updates — the club doctor, the player, or both.

We also respect the club's need for discretion. Players can be booked under quiet schedules and private rooms on request, and we never use a player's name or image without written consent.

Prevention pays

The cheapest injury is the one that never happens. A 2017 BJSM meta-analysis found that teams using the FIFA 11+ warm-up had 39% fewer injuries overall, with reductions of around 60% for hamstring injuries and 48% for knee injuries. It takes around 20 minutes, needs only cones and a field, and can be built into every training session.

When your player returns from treatment in India, build prevention into the plan, not just the rehab. Read return to play after ACL surgery for the testing that keeps players on the pitch.

Planning from Africa and the Gulf

Most clubs route players through Delhi, then on to the treating city. Chandigarh is about an hour from Delhi by air, with a calm, green setting for recovery. Our Africa desk helps with medical visas, payments and travel from African countries, and our country pages — for example Nigeria, Kenya and the UAE — explain routes and paperwork.

Package prices are per person and exclude flights. For tested players, check every medicine — read anti-doping and treatment abroad. Start with our sports medicine guide or book a consultation.

Hamstring injuries. In the UEFA Elite Club Injury Study they rose from 12% of all injuries in 2001/02 to 24% in 2021/22.

Does the FIFA 11+ warm-up prevent injuries?

Yes. A 2017 meta-analysis found 39% fewer injuries overall in teams using FIFA 11+, including fewer hamstring and knee injuries.

Can a club send players to India for surgery and rehab?

Yes. Clubs send MRI images for a specialist review, receive a written plan and estimate per player, then arrange surgery or a supervised rehab block with a handover for the club physio.
