What Transparent Medical Travel Really Means

Médicos con nombre, presupuestos por escrito, comisiones declaradas, ningún puesto pagado y derecho a cambiar de opinión: cómo debería ser la transparencia y cómo poner a prueba a cualquier facilitador.

“Transparent” is easy to write on a website. Here is what it should mean in practice, and how to test it with any facilitator, including us.

  1. You know who the doctor is — name, hospital and qualifications — before you pay for a consultation.
  2. Estimates are written and itemised, and changes are confirmed in writing.
  3. Fees are disclosed: what you pay the facilitator, and whether the hospital pays them anything.
  4. No paid placements: a hospital’s position on a website should not be for sale.
  5. You can get another opinion without being made to feel disloyal.
  6. You can see your own records and take them with you.
  7. Complaints have a path: a named person, a timeline, an answer.
  8. No cash to individuals: every payment has a receipt.

Test it: ask any facilitator these eight questions in writing. Clear, written answers are a good sign. Our own answers are on How we choose doctors, hospitals and prices.
