Air Ambulance and Critical-Care Transfers to India
When an air ambulance is the right choice, what bed-to-bed transfer includes, the paperwork it needs and how ground ambulances take over in Chandigarh — explained simply.

Most patients reach India on an ordinary flight. A few are too unwell for that — after a stroke, a heart attack, a serious accident or on a ventilator. For them, the journey itself is part of the treatment, and it must be planned by doctors.
Which Kind of Transfer Is Right?
| Option | Suits |
|---|---|
| Scheduled flight with assistance | Stable patients who can sit; wheelchair help at both airports |
| Scheduled flight with a medical escort | Stable patients who need a doctor or nurse alongside, oxygen or medication on board |
| Stretcher on a scheduled flight | Patients who must lie flat but don't need intensive care — offered by some airlines on some routes |
| एयर एम्बुलेंस | Critically ill patients who need an intensive-care team and equipment throughout |
The decision belongs to the doctors: the team treating the patient now, and the specialists who will receive them in India. We gather their reports, share them, and arrange exactly what they advise.
What "Bed to Bed" Means
- Medical review. Both teams agree the patient is fit to travel and what support is needed on the way.
- Permissions. Visas for the patient and up to two attendants, landing permissions and hospital acceptance.
- Hospital to aircraft. A ground ambulance with a medical team takes the patient to the aircraft.
- In the air. A doctor and nurse with ventilator, monitors, oxygen and medicines.
- Aircraft to hospital. In India, a ground ambulance meets the aircraft and takes the patient straight to the receiving team.
Paperwork, Done Early
Ask for an up-to-date medical summary, the latest scans and blood tests, and a letter stating the patient is fit to fly with the planned support. Visas follow the usual rules — see our medical visa guide — but urgent cases can move quickly when the documents are ready.
Arriving in Chandigarh
Chandigarh International Airport is a designated e-Visa arrival airport. Ground ambulances with critical-care equipment can take patients from the aircraft to hospitals in Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula. For transfers within India, we also arrange ground ambulances over longer distances.
Civil aviation in India is regulated by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation. We work only with licensed operators, and we tell you the cost in writing before anything is booked.
The Family on the Journey
Often one relative can fly with the patient, depending on the aircraft. Others can follow on a scheduled flight; we meet them and bring them to the hospital. Read care for the carers.
लोग जो पूछते हैं
Is an air ambulance always necessary?
No. Many patients fly on scheduled flights with a medical escort, a stretcher or oxygen. The treating doctors decide what is safe; we arrange the option they advise.
Can family fly with the patient?
Often one companion can travel on the aircraft, depending on its size and the patient's needs. We confirm this with the operator in advance.
Who regulates air ambulances in India?
